During the waning days of World War II, the Allies launched a horrific aerial assault on Dresden, a city that was known as the Florence of Germany. Nearly 4,000 tons of bombs leveled over 15 square miles of the city, killing upwards of 25,000 people. The devastation has been compared to what was later visited upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
