About the Project

When one of the most historically rich buildings in Watts is threatened with a major housing redevelopment, a coalition of local artists and activists come together to preserve the building and revitalize its original mission of fostering arts in the community.

Friends At Mafundi, a grassroots organization created to prevent the demolition of the historic Watts Happening Cultural Center and more broadly, to preserve and restore the building, and create a contemporary space for its historic arts programs. This short documentary film will feature intimate, behind-scenes-footage with the organization as it fights against designed systems of injustice in order to reinvigorate a rich history of self-expression through arts embedded in the culture of Watts and other South Los Angeles communities of color with similar struggles.
