About the Project

18 is an upcoming documentary by Tokyo / Vermont celebrating the 50th anniversary of Steve Reich’s masterwork, Music for 18 Musicians. The film examines the piece's architecture and enduring cultural influence through conversations with key musicians, composers, and critics. Intercutting these insights with extended performance passages and archival footage, it visually channels the experimental spirit of the 1970s downtown New York art scene while tracing how a singular composition continues to reshape contemporary sound.

To bring this film to completion, we rely directly on a community of patrons, listeners, and champions who recognize the historic importance of Steve Reich’s work. 18 is designed to be both an immersive cinematic experience and an educational testament to a piece of music that fundamentally altered modern composition.
