The 2020 IDA Documentary Award is recognizing Firelight Media with the Pioneer Award, which acknowledges those individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to advancing the nonfiction form and providing exceptional vision and leadership to the documentary community. Firelight is a premier destination for non-fiction cinema by and about communities of color. Firelight produces documentary films, supports emerging filmmakers of color, and cultivates audiences for their work. Firelight films have garnered multiple Primetime Emmys, Peabodys, and Sundance awards.

In this conversation, award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter chats with Firelight Media founders Stanley Nelson and Marcia Smith as well as Senior Vice President for Programs, Loira Limbal, about their work at Firelight and as filmmakers.
