Who Attends Getting Real?
See registered 2024 attendees here. In 2022, we hosted our most international Getting Real conference to date, welcoming 600 in-person and more than 2,000 virtual participants from a total of 69 countries.
Recent past featured speakers include filmmakers such as Dawn Porter, Morgan Spurlock, Lucy Walker, Nanfu Wang, Frederick Wiseman, Sam Feder, Jessica Beshir, Payal Kapadia, Sara Dosa, Su Kim, Amy Hobby, Joe Bini, Karim Amer, Michèle Stephenson, Stanley Nelson, Michel Zongo, Rosine Mbakam, Rokhsareh Ghaemmaghami, Anand Patwardhan, and many others. Other attendees include industry professionals and executives from Just Films | Ford Foundation, Cinetic, A&E, Netflix, Nat Geo Documentary Films, ITVS, AmDoc/POV, Firelight Media, Kin Theory, NEA, Danish Film Institute, Taiwan Docs, California Humanities, BAVC, Documentary Organization of Canada, Documentary Association of Europe, and others.
Over the past decade, the impact of Getting Real on the broader nonfiction filmmaking industry has been extensive. Some panels that began at the conference, such as the #decolonizedocs strand, have reconfigured the terms of conversations around questions of ethics, access, and accountability within the larger documentary industry. Important filmmaker-led documentary organizations, including FWD-Doc (Documentary Filmmakers With Disabilities), A-Doc (Asian American Documentary Network), and the Undocumented Filmmakers Collective, emerged directly out of conversations at Getting Real. In 2022, IDA announced the commencement of the groundbreaking Nonfiction Access Initiative (NAI), a multi-year collaborative effort that will support and create resources for disabled nonfiction filmmakers.
To ensure Getting Real ’24 attendance continues to reflect a diverse range of geographic, racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, we will conduct targeted outreach to members of organizations and filmmaker collectives who may be unable to attend but nevertheless will significantly contribute to conference discussions. Individuals who face financial barriers to purchasing a pass can email conference@documentary.org to receive a complimentary virtual pass, no questions asked.
Policies
Video and Camera Policy: Our events and sessions will be live-streamed to our virtual platform by IDA staff. That is the only permitted recording at the conference. Live streaming of events by attendees is not permitted at Getting Real ‘24. Photos, social media stories, and quotes are welcome in open sessions. To ensure a safe space for all of our guests, filming and on-spot interviews of attendees by non-staffers are also not allowable at the conference.
No/Low Scent Policy: We ask all guests who are joining us in person to arrive using no to low-scented products. This means refraining from using perfumes, lotions, detergents, oils, and hair products with strong fragrances. Learn more about why this is important and what we will do in the accessibility tab of the event website.
COVID-19: While Getting Real ’24 will not require testing nor masking, attendees are encouraged to do so.
