IDA Conversation Series: Nanfu Wang
Join us for our next summer Conversation Series event with independent filmmaker Nanfu Wang. This special evening will include clips from Wang’s acclaimed films, followed by an in-depth Q&A session with Justin Chang, film critic for Los Angeles Times and NPR’s “Fresh Air” and regular contributor to KPCC’s “FilmWeek.”
Wang’s burgeoning documentary career has been celebrated worldwide. Her debut feature, Hooligan Sparrow (2016), was shortlisted for the 2017 Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature and received two Emmy® nominations as well as an IDA Documentary Award for Emerging Filmmaker. Her other works include 2017’s SXSW Special Jury Prize winner, I Am Another You (2017) as well as the IDA Enterprise Documentary Fund-supported One Child Nation (releasing this August), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
Born in Jiangxi Province, China and based in New York City, Wang takes an unprecedented look at the Chinese government, policy and societal norms and their effect on the lives of Chinese citizens through her confrontational films. From documenting protests against a covered-up rape case in Hainan Province to investigating the grim local repercussions of the one-child policy, Wang has faced government harassment, risked personal safety, and used inventive methods in fearlessly tackling some of the most controversial issues in China today.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to gain insider access into the world of this extraordinary documentary filmmaker. Ample time for Q&A will be included in the program.
