Synopsis

A contemporary take on cinema’s most iconic figure, this sweeping biopic combines unheard audio recordings, dramatic reconstructions and personal archival footage to trace Charlie Chaplin’s meteoric rise from Victorian London to Hollywood superstardom. This kaleidoscopic documentary portrait explores the facets of a complex figure whose life was as extraordinary as his art. For decades he was the most famous man in the world. But who was The Real Charlie Chaplin?

This digital screening includes a moderated filmmaker conversation that will be on demand with the film. Participants include Directors Peter Middleton and James Spinney, moderated by Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly.

Peter and James have been working together for the past ten years on a range of fiction, documentary and cross-platform projects. During this period they adapted the audio diaries of theologian John Hull into a series of award-winning short films, including the Emmy Award-winning, NOTES ON BLINDNESS (2014). Their critically acclaimed debut feature, also entitled NOTES ON BLINDNESS, premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for three BAFTAs (including Documentary and Outstanding British Film) and six British Independent Film Awards (winning Best Documentary). THE REAL CHARLIE CHAPLIN (2021) is their second feature-length documentary. The film, a cinematic exploration of Hollywood’s most iconic figure, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and is set for general release this fall.
