About the Project

The documentary podcast, A Matter of Conscience: GI Resistance During the Vietnam War, will use audio interviews recorded in the late 1980s/early 1990s with veterans involved in the unprecedented GI movement against the war, often working in collaboration with the civilian anti-war movement. One Army colonel wrote that the army was in a “state approaching collapse.” Dissent within the ranks was key to reigning in the worst impulses of America’s political leaders, and as many historians acknowledge, it eventually led to ending U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia. The veterans’ stories will be supplemented with interviews conducted with historians, legal experts, and others involved with the GI movement to give context to the veterans’ experiences.
