About the Project
On July 20, 2026, a 36-year-old California man with autism and a history of mental illness, is accused of killing his 61-year-old mother with a hammer. Three months earlier, his father, a clinical psychologist, approached filmmakers to document what he believed was the mental health system’s failure to help his family, and warned that his son was becoming violent. SAFFORD (wt) is a feature documentary using one family’s decades-long struggle, and an extraordinary archive, to ask what happens when families and the mental health system miss the signs.
