About the Project
In America’s remote forests, wildfire is a constant force. Many of us experience it through smoke rather than flames. Yet deep in those woods, federal wildland firefighters confront difficult and dangerous conditions to protect communities and natural resources. Smoke shows the daily realities of life on the fireline and at home. The film stays grounded in the people who do this work, connecting the intensity of the job to the reality of life back home. Their stories unfold through fire seasons as the job continues to evolve in the field as well as the formation of the new Fire Service. The film stays grounded in the people on the fireline and the public lands and communities they protect, connecting the experiences of the job to real life.
