About the Project

Y? Chromosome will examine hypermasculinity, homophobia, and heterosexism in the African American community and the concept of masculinity at large by combining expert interviews with first-person testimonials. It will expound the controversial themes of traditional manhood, the construct of the Strong Black Man, dual-identity development, and homophobia in the Black church. Utilizing a cinema vérité style, the camera will follow four characters whose journey is closely related with each theme. The audience will now be able to put faces to phobias and realize that a MAN is central to huMANity, regardless of his sexual orientation.
