Documentary is happy to debut an exclusive clip from Dan Covert’s Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life, a SXSW Audience Award-winning biodoc about the prolific artist whose work has been exhibited in museums and blue-chip galleries, and who is a frequent collaborator with brands (Hèrmes, Vans, Patagonia) and filmmakers (title designs for Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze films). Gravitas Ventures is releasing the film in NY theaters on Friday and on VOD on July 2.
Regarding the clip, the director writes, “This clip comes a quarter of a way into the film and shows a key turning point in Geoff’s career. After working with the Beastie Boys on their magazine, Grand Royal, McFetridge started his own small design practice taking commissions from clients. However, he ultimately realizes this traditional way of working is not as fulfilling and instead starts taking risks and answering briefs in unexpected ways. This is the beginning of a new chapter in Geoff’s career, one that leads to collaborating with Sofia Coppola on her clothing line MilkFed and the titles for her film, The Virgin Suicides. Geoff has always grown his career authentically by listening to what feels true to him and jettisoning what doesn’t—even areas in which he’s found success—and this is a through-line we follow throughout the film.”
Drawing a Life is Covert’s first feature film, though the filmmaker has a background in design before venturing into commercial directing. The film carries an executive producer credit from Spike Jonze.
