About the Project

Standing before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, "St. Elmo's Fire" screenwriter Carl Kurlander recounts the forgotten role the jukebox and his Grandpa Jack played in making that happen. During the Depression, Jack Cohen bets everything on a coin-operated phonograph, realizing while no one has money for records, everyone has a nickel to play their favorite song. Jack and jukeboxes helpd democratizes music, break barriers of segregation, and spark a revolution that in Cleveland first becomes known as “rock and roll."
