About the Screening
Echo In The Canyon is a look back at the influence and the music of The Byrds, The Mamas & the Papas, Buffalo Springfield and The Beach Boys, from Southern California’s age of innocence (1965 - 1967); the beginnings of Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon music scene, and how the echo of these artist’s creations reverberated between each other and ultimately across to London (where it alters the course of The Beatles themselves.)
Screening of film is followed by a moderated post-film conversation with Director/Producer Andrew Slater, Producer Eric Barret and Executive Producer Jakob Dylan.
Andrew Slater, Director, Producer, Co-Writer
Andrew Slater began his career as a music critic. A contributor to Rolling Stone, Billboard and People, he left journalism in 1984 to join Frontline Management, where he worked with The Go-Go’s, Stevie Nicks, the Beastie Boys, Don Henley, Lenny Kravitz and Jane’s Addiction. Along with his management work Andrew became a record producer, producing three records for Warren Zevon. He produced the debut single for the Wallflowers (The Wallflowers, 1992) as well as the band’s 2000 album, Breach. In 1996 he produced Fiona Apple’s critically acclaimed debut album Tidal, which sold more than 3 milion copies in the U.S. and earned the artist a Grammy Award. In 1998 he produced Macy Gray’s debut album On How Life Is, which sold 7 million copies and earned Gray a Grammy. He managed both of these artists during these successes. In May of 2001, Mr. Slater was appointed the President and CEO of Capitol Records. Echo In The Canyon is his first documentary feature film as a writer/director.
Eric Barrett, Producer, Co-Writer
Eric is the Owner/Executive Producer of Mirror Films, a Los Angeles based production-company that has produced music videos and commercials. Working with such artists as Paul McCartney, U2, Madonna, Prince, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shania Twain, Mötley Crüe, Aerosmith, and the Dave Matthews Band, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Video for “What Would You Say.” Eric also worked on the feature length documentary As I Am: The Life And Times of DJ AM, and produced the documentary ” Lost and Found”.
Jakob Dylan, Director, Executive Producer
Jakob Dylan is an American singer and songwriter who rose to fame as the lead singer and primary songwriter for the rock band the Wallflowers, who have released six albums since 1992. Dylan has written notable hits such as "6th Avenue Heartache" and "One Headlight", which is listed at number 58 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Pop Songs". He has won two Grammy Awards, and released two solo albums: Seeing Things in 2008 and Women + Country in 2010. Women + Country became Dylan's highest-charting album since the Wallflowers' 1996 breakthrough Bringing Down the Horse, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard 200.
