About the Project
THE FIRST BALL GAME is a feature documentary sharing the stories of Indigenous Mesoamerican communities across Los Angeles, the United States, and Mexico, who are reviving ulama and p’ok ta p’ok – the world’s oldest team sports – in the streets, riverbeds, and parks of the modern world. A cinematic expression of sport, cultural reclamation, and diasporic identity, the film asks what it means to play a game invented thousands of years ago – and why that act of play is, for many, a connection to heritage, belonging, and the universe. It is The Oldest Game on Earth…Still in Play. Currently in production.
