Doc News Shorts: September 4, 2009

The IDA's DocuWeeks 2009 may be over but, people are still talking about it. Steve Pond, newest columnist at The Wrap who is covering the Academy Awards wrote a piece about the hoops filmmakers jump through to qualify for the Oscars (called, fittingly enough, "Filmmakers Jump Through Hoops to Qualify Docs for Oscars") and gave a nod to DocuWeeks in the process. Over 30 musicians, actors, writers, poets and others tell the story of Big Sur, Jack Kerouac's soul-searching memoir of desperation and redemption in the new documentary One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur. The movie will be released Oct. 20, along with a 30-city theatrical release and a new album featuring 12 original songs--with lyrics based on the prose of Kerouac's 1962 landmark novel--composed and performed by Jay Farrar of Son Volt and Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie. Documentaries have continued to be one of the most popular genres on Hulu and they're expanding the lineup with the online premiere of 3 Points, a film that details NBA star Tracy "T-Mac" McGrady’s journey to Africa and throughout the Darfur refugee camps in Chad. The site also features an exclusive Q&A with McGrady about the film. (via Hulu)
