Screen Time: Week of July 5

By Akiva Gottlieb

Screen Time is your curated weekly guide to excellent documentaries and nonfiction programs that you can watch at home.

Showing July 5 and 6 as part of KCET and Link TV's "EARTH FOCUS Presents" series is 2007's The 11th Hour, created, produced, co-written and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. The Christian Science Monitor called it "considerably less slick than An Inconvenient Truth, and no less urgent."

Currently streaming on Netflix is Alma Har'el's genre-bending documentary LoveTrue, which tackles three complementary stories that demystify the fantasy of true love. IndieWire writes that "Har'el's affection for her subjects is clear, though she’s unafraid to show them in a honest light that illuminates what makes them flawed, fascinating human beings."

Now available at Filmstruck is Agnes Varda's The Gleaners and I, a diary and essay-film from 2000 about those who sift through the dumpsters and markets of France. The Chicago Tribune wrote that "In its frames, we see [Varda's] empathy, skill, curiosity, wit, poetry and passion for life: everything she has gleaned from a lifetime of love and movies."
