DocuClub LA: Streetlight Harmonies

IDA Office, 3470 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 980, Los Angeles CA 90010

About the Screening

Please join us Monday, May 14, for DocuClub LA with a screening of Streetlight Harmonies. Following the screening, we will be joined by director/producer Brent Wilson and producer Theresa Steele for a moderated discussion.

It’s the unmistakable falsetto leads, lilting harmonies and deep backing vocals set to a bluesy street corner rhythm that created those unmistakable sounds...Up On The Roof (The Drifters), Tears On My Pillow (Little Anthony & The Imperials), Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (The Platters), and Why Do Fools Fall in Love (Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers).  All an endless jukebox of melodies and memories.

No other genre of music can conjure up the innocence of a nation or the pangs of love quite like the timeless sounds of Doo-Wop.  We all know the songs, but few know the artists or their story.

Streetlight Harmonies is the definitive journey through this often forgotten period of American music and the trailblazers that laid the foundation for Rock & Roll and built a bridge to the Civil Rights Movement.

Featuring 32 iconic songs, restored archival footage, and rare interviews with some of the last surviving artists of the genre, including:  Jimmy Merchant (Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers), Anthony Gourdine (Little Anthony and The Imperials), Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson Band), Charlie Thomas (The Drifters), Sammy Strain (The Imperials, O'Jays), Terry Johnson (The Flamingos), Diz Russell (The Orioles), Fred Parris (The 5 Satins), Lois Powell (The Chantels), La La Brooks (The Crystals), Vito Picone (The Elegants), Eddie Rich (The Swallows), Leon Hughes (The Coasters), Hall of Fame writer and producer, Jeff Barry, Brooks Arthur, Wally Roker (The Heartbeats), Freda Payne, Sherrie Payne (The Supremes), Florence La Rue ( The Fifth Dimension), Claude McKnight (Take 6), Brian McKnight, Lance Bass (NSYNC), Barbara Jean English (The Clickettes), Ron Dante (The Archies), Jon Bauman, Lenny Welch, Lamont Dozier, and many more.

Doors open at 7:00 pm. Screening, followed by a moderated feedback discussion with the filmmakers - 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm. Drinks and snacks will be available for a modest suggested donation.

Space is very limited so please update your RSVP if you can't make it so we can have a real count of the attendees. Admission not guaranteed, all RSVP's are first-come, first served.
