About the Project

In South Los Angeles, in one of the most notoriously underserved communities in the country, an unconventional yet overachieving charter school is working with locals to change the narrative for its youth. Weaving together the intimate personal narratives of the students, families, educators and community members involved with the Watts Learning Center, A SCHOOL GROWS IN WATTS paints a lyrical portrait of a complex community, exploring its infamous history and systemic obstacles through the work and growth of a mighty school with humble beginnings.
